Operations
In life, you're either a passenger or a pilot. The choice is yours.

The Huntsville Soaring Club is a chapter of the Soaring Society of America (SSA). Our principal aim is to provide soaring facilities for our members and our secondary purpose is to promote the sport of soaring locally and nationally. We fly from Moontown Airport, located on Moontown Road, off Hwy 72E, approximately eight miles from U.S. 231 (Memorial Parkway). Click Here to see a map.
Members schedule flights by entering the desired day and time on our Yahoo! newsgroup calendar. Most soaring occurs on weekends; however, weekday flying is encouraged and can be arranged on an individual basis. Each club member, except instructors and tow pilots, is expected to serve as Field Operations Officer (FOO) for one weekend day approximately once every four to six weeks. The FOO supervises club ground operations at the airport and collects tow fees.
Several club pilots actively pursue cross country soaring, sailplane racing, and flying for records. A U.S. national soaring record and many Alabama state soaring records are held by HSC members. One member is a multi-time U.S. regional contest winner and candidate to fly on the U.S. Soaring Team in the next World Gliding Championships. At this writing, 15 sailplanes are owned by club members. These include: an ASW-27, ASW-20, two LS-3a's, LS-8a, two Grob Astir CS's, a Grob 103 Twin, a Glasflugel Mosquito, a Discus B, two Russia AC-4C's, a Diamant 16.5, and one Schweizer 1-26.
