Huntsville Soaring Club

Events

Pilots are a rare kind of human. They leave the ordinary surface of the world, to purify their soul in the sky, and they come down to earth, only after receiving the communion of the infinite.

— José Maria Velasco Ibarra, President of Ecuador —

Meetings of the general membership are held on the third Monday of each month. We do not publish a newsletter; however, club members and officers use our Yahoo! newsgroup at almost daily to exchange information, conduct club business, and generally keep in touch.

We sponsor soaring safety seminars, host the Georgia-Tennessee-Alabama (GTA) sailplane races twice a year, and visit other soaring sites. For example, many of us participate in Chilhowee Gliderport's annual Oktoberfest. Upwards of 30 sailplanes and 100-150 pilots and family members usually attend this event. In 1996, the Huntsville Soaring Club hosted the Soaring Society of Amerca's national convention at the Von Braun Center. Except for a world championship, the SSA convention is the largest scheduled gathering of soaring pilots in the world.
